Canutes Cottage is our family beach cottage, on the beach, below the railway line at Southport, a long hour’s drive south of Durban. It’s a beautiful beach with excellent swimming, rock pools, walks and blue flag status.
The cottage is light and airy and has a certain charm that everyone loves. Simple but special. We have a wonderful caretaker Michael who lives on the property and services the house (we do charge an extra R25 per person per day as a tip for Michael, ideally to be given to him directly). We sleep 10 people in 5 bedrooms with 4 bathrooms.
The main house has a large sitting room and dining area, as well as the kitchen, and two bedrooms with one separate and shared bathroom inside.
The living area leads onto a verandah with lovely views of the sea. It is well protected weather wise and we normally eat outside unless it’s raining. There are two large bedrooms with bathrooms en-suite, just outside but adjacent to the main verandah, and a smaller rondavel making up the fifth bedroom. There is also an outside shower and toilet.
The house is alarmed and has security beams, an electric fence (palisade, with electric above) and secure parking for 4 vehicles. We are serviced by the local security company. We have 2 x 5000 litre water tanks for the times that the municipal supply lets us down. Our provision for loadshedding is limited but we do have a large camping one-plate gas cooker, plus a smaller one. We do have rechargeable globes in most of the lamps but do request guests bring their own torches and lights. There is also a full TV and DSTV set up.
It is a delightful cottage for a family holiday and we have 60 years of visitors' books extolling its virtues, which shows how much the cottage has been enjoyed by so many!
