Lake Eland Game Reserve
Covering 2500 hectares this nature reserve is a must stop for any visitor to the South Coast. Take a walk on their 80m suspension bridge, go game viewing, enjoy a meal in the licensed restaurant while the kids play in the playground. Other activities in the reserve include horse riding, hiking, single track mountain bike trails, paintball, fishing, picnic sites and 4x4 tracks.

Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve
This scenic nature reserve lies 25km inland from Port Shepstone and commands some breathtaking scenery of the Umzinkulwana river gorge. The reserve is a great bird watching destination, and there are a number of self-guided trails to scenic spots within the reserve. Picnic spots are also available along the river banks.

Beaches
The main attraction of the South Coast is arguably its many outstanding beaches, including a number of Blue Flag beaches. From Port Edward in the South to Scottburgh in the North, there are literally dozens of amazing beaches to visit. Best bet is to ask one of the locals for their suggestions on which beaches to visit, as there are many hidden gems along the coast other than just the main bathing beaches.
Scuba Diving
The South Coast is a very popular destination for scuba divers, many of whom will be determined to visit the very impressive Aliwal Shoal, which is located just off Umkomaas. Coffee Estate

Umtamvuna Gorge
The Umtamvuna Gorge is a stunning gorge just a few kilometres from Port Edward beach. There are a number of hiking trails available, either starting from the Nature Reserve at the top of the gorge, or at the entrance just past the Old Pont Caravan Park. Nature lovers will enjoy a walk through the riverine forest along the banks of the Umtamvuna river and the incredible views from the top of the gorge.

The Red Desert

For the adventurous souls out there, why not try some shark diving. Protea Banks, off Shelly Beach, is a premier shark diving destination. However, this option is only for the more experienced divers out there. Bass fishing
There are numerous dams dotted around the South Coast, many of which are on private farmland. Some of the bigger dams, such as at Lake Eland Game Reserve allow fishing as well. Gremlins fishing shop in Margate would also be a good source of information as to where you can go to catch bass.
Beach Braai
Enjoy a braai while at the beach. Not all beaches will allow you to light a fire and have a braai, but it is allowed at some beaches. Palm Beach for example has some built-in braais in a lovely setting under the trees.
Deep Sea Fishing
The South Coast is a well-known fishing destination, with deep sea fishing charters being particularly popular. Booking with a well-established fishing charter is a great way to get into the action without having to worry about buying any of your own deep sea fishing gear. Many charters have been operating for years and are very experienced fishermen. To find a local charter boat, contact the local ski-boat clubs, or even the tourist info center.

Rock & surf fishing is extremely popular along the coast, especially in the winter months when the Shad are on the bite.

The South Coast abounds with excellent fishing spots, some of which include Margate Pier, Orange Rocks in Uvongo, Splash Rock in Port Edward and hundreds of other spots in-between. Getting started is relatively inexpensive, with most supermarkets having a range of fishing gear for sale. The winter months of May to August is probably the best time to fish from the shore as this is over the annual sardine run, and the Shad are numerous and easy to catch. Gremlins Bait and Tackle shop would also be a great spot to get your gear and some good advice as well.

The South Coast is home to two crocodile farms. Crocworld is in Scottburgh and is a great family destination with a lovely restaurant on the complex. Riverbend Crocodile Farm is located in Southbroom, and it too is a great family destination with a coffee shop on the premises.

Surf Lessons
Surfing is a very popular sport on the South Coast. The sub-tropical climate allows year-round surfing, with the winter months producing some world class waves at some of the popular surf breaks. Snorkeling
The South Coast is full of large rock pools and lots of protected little bays that make snorkeling a great way to enjoy a beach holiday. Many rock pools get exposed during low tides, especially during spring tides, and there is much to look at in most of the pools.

Hiking trails abound along the South Coast. There are a number of well-established hiking trails throughout the South Coast. A simple Google search should show you what trails are close to you, or even a chat to one of the locals who will surely point you in the right direction.
Mpenjati Nature Reserve
Located between Palm Beach and Trafalgar, the Mpenjati Nature Reserve is a great place to spend a day fishing in the lagoon while braaing at one of the built-in braai spots scattered along the banks of the river. The reserve also boasts some lovely walks through the coastal forest, as well as having access to the beach at the mouth of the Mpenjati river.
